Worthy is the Lamb

Revelation 5:9-12 says this,

And they *sang a new song, saying,

“Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. 10 “You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth.” 11 Then I looked, and I heard the voice of many angels around the throne and the living creatures and the elders; and the number of them was myriads of myriads, and thousands of thousands,
12 saying with a loud voice, “Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.”

We have in Revelation 4 and 5, scenes of God’s people and the angels worshipping God in heaven.  In Revelation 5:9,10 we have a hymn of praise to God and it is addressed to the Lord Jesus Christ who was slain for our sins. Jesus is the One who conquered sin and death! This theme is the focal point of the book of Revelation because He has delivered and set apart for Himself a people dedicated to serve Him.  The hymn is being sung by God’s people celebrating the history of God saving His people.  God’s people constitute a kingdom who obeys and worships Jesus as Lord and Savior. Close your eyes and try to imagine the vision that John is seeing here – the angels, living creatures, elders, and MYRIADS of people, singing together to the Lamb Who was sacrificed to pay the price for all our sin!

In the wording of Revelation 5:12, here are seven things mentioned which Jesus as the Lamb of God is worthy to receive:  power, riches, wisdom, might, honor, glory, and blessing.  The number seven in the book of Revelation is symbolic of the fullness of something or someone.  In this case Jesus is worthy to receive the fullness of praise from God’s people. What we must bear in mind is that much the same words offered to God the Father in Revelation 4:11 are repeated to Jesus in Revelation 5:12. When we compare the words and to Whom they are offered in Rev. 4:11 and Rev. 5:12 , we come to the conclusion that Jesus is God the Son, equal to God the Father. The whole host of heaven, both angels and the people of God who have passed from this life to the next are worshiping God the Father and God the Son.  This is a powerful testimony of the full deity of the Lord Jesus Christ. We are to follow and imitate these heavenly portraits of worship as we worship Jesus. He is both God and man.  We are also to serve Jesus Christ as we turn away from sin and yield to Jesus as Lord – as the One who died for us that we might have everlasting life and fellowship with Him both right now, in this life, and in the life to come.  Let us trust in Jesus Christ as the divine Lord and Savior for He is worthy of our worship, praise and service.

“Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing.” AMEN!
