Helping Up Mission (HUM) in downtown Baltimore has served the Greater Baltimore area since 1885. HUM seeks to address the immediate effects and the underlying causes of urban homelessness, drug addiction, joblessness, and poverty. In addition to an overnight housing program for men who need a place to sleep and eat, HUM offers residential programs such as their 12-month Spiritual Recovery Programs for men and women. HUM strategically partners alongside other organizations; for example, with Johns Hopkins to jointly address addiction, with the US Department of Veterans Affairs to assist local veterans, and with local hospitals to provide “next-step” residential programs for those needing transitional support after a hospital stay. Each July Bishop Cummins collects essential supplies for HUM residents and other participants.
