Cummins Theological Seminary was founded in 1876. The previous year, several Black congregations had joined the fledgling RE denomination, in part because their previous denomination would not allow post-Civil War freedmen to serve as ministers. The school that grew into Cummins Theological Seminary was started to equip those who would lead these churches (rec-dse.org/history.html). Today the seminary is collocated with the headquarters of the RE Diocese of the Southeast in Summerville, South Carolina, with Bishop Willie Hill as president. The school’s webpage features the motto “Enter to Learn … Live to Serve” (www.cumminstheoseminary.org). There are three graduate programs: Master of Divinity; Master of Arts in Christian Leadership; and African American Religious Studies. There are also several certificate programs, including Biblical Studies, Diaconal Ministry, African American Religious Studies, and a Deaconess certificate.
