John 20:30,31 says this,
“30 Therefore many other signs Jesus also performed in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these have been written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in His name.”
John refers to the “many other signs” that Jesus accomplished in the presence of the disciples. These signs of which John speaks are the many miracles that Jesus did in front of His disciples and the multitudes including miracles of healing, casting out demons, walking on water, feeding the 5,000, raising the dead, and His own resurrection. Just prior to these verses, Jesus has appeared before Thomas telling him in verse 27, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.”
The sign of Jesus’s glorified wounds which He offered to Thomas was one thing, but our Lord also carried out many other signs in front of the disciples during the forty days following His resurrection. During this time He ate and drank with His disciples and taught them many things, offering them as Luke says in Acts 1:3 “many convincing proofs.” The purpose of these miracles was to bear witness to the fact that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing we may have life in His name. Our Lord Jesus Christ in mercy condescended to the weakness of our faith and visibly demonstrated that He was who He said He was by His miracles. The message of the Christ was intended to draw us to Christ. Throughout this Gospel, John, inspired by the Holy Spirit, has rightly portrayed Jesus as the Christ (John 1:41), the Son of God (John 1;49), the Eternal Word of the Father (John 1:1), and One who was fully God, fully man. (John 1:1,14). Thomas said of Jesus in John 20:28, “My Lord and my God.” All these signs also point to the revelation of Jesus as the Creator of all things (John 1:3), the Life Giver (John 1:4), the light of the world (John 8:12), and the One in Whom was the resurrection and the life (John 11:25,26). Let us cling to Jesus, our risen Lord and Savior. He is Risen, He is Risen, indeed!
